My Story

My name is Nicola Walker and I am the owner of Precise Prose Writing Services. I am a UK based proof-reader, bookworm, bibliophile and teacher of English.

Since childhood I have loved books and reading. I have a particular interest in classic, historical and romantic fiction, history, theology and religion. Naturally, English was always my favourite subject at school. In 1997 I graduated from Trinity College, Carmarthen with a BA Honours in Humanities, majoring in English. The following year, I achieved a PGCE in Education and Training from the University of Wales College, Newport. My postgraduate career began in the further education sector in the UK, where I taught English, literacy and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) for several years before deciding to set up my own private tutoring business, Top Marks Education.

For decades, Top Marks Education has successfully helped numerous students achieve their specific, individual learning goals through face to face or virtual one on one learning. As part of my business, I was inspired to design and maintain my own business website and two blogs, each aimed at a particular audience in relation to teaching and education. In addition, I have designed and developed over many hours a range of teaching and learning resources. All of these experiences have provided me with a perfect environment to hone my proofreading skills and to craft and edit my own writing with a specific target audience in mind.

In 2018, I undertook my first professional proofreading assignment for Strand Publishing UK, which is a small, independent publishing company with a niche audience. The novella, Rhubarb and Aliens by Paul Hutchens was successfully published in paperback in the same year.

Since then, I have also proofread a scientific article on stream ecology for Dr Aitor Larranaga at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain. This article is due to be published in 2022.

My goal is to create a finished piece of writing that is accurately written, structured effectively for the target reader and a pleasure to read.
